School Committees

Please join our school committees and get involved!

The Village
Our motto is surrounded by this theme, “It takes a village to raise a child.”

Our Mission: The Village mission is to build a cultural community and understanding among Jefferson’s families, teachers, and students. There will be more information regarding the group in the new year regarding events, meetings, forums, cultural building, and more. The group is open up to all Jefferson families. Information on meeting dates will come soon. If you have any questions regarding the group please email Robin Harley or Jamaica Moon.

English Language Advisory Council
ELAC assists the school in providing resources for limited and non-English speaking students. Parents of children for whom English is not their native language are encouraged to get involved. Contact Prashant Jawaliker for more information

Garden Committee
Like to get your hands dirty?  Help weed, plant, and harvest at our once-a-month garden work parties!  Or better yet,  join the Garden Committee and assist with planning and coordinating garden activities for the school helping the garden grow and flourish through each season. If you are interested in joining or have a great garden idea, please contact email Hai Ping Mo or Anne Cockle.

Grants Committee
The Grants Committee searches for funding opportunities and works with other PTA committees to write grant proposals to finance school and PTA projects. If you have a grant writing background or are just interested in helping to find sources of funding for our school, please contact Stacie Ma’a or Gwen Loeb.

Our School Cares
Our School Cares helps Jefferson families in need, organizing drives for Halloween costumes, holiday gifts, Valentines, etc. and providing struggling families with resources like food and clothing. Contact Christina Hernandez if you are interested in helping out.

Science Committee
The Science Committee supports the teachers to enhance science education and enthusiasm at Jefferson. Contact Mas Handa to get involved.

School Governance Council
The Jefferson School Governance Council (SGC) is made up of Principal Mary Cazden, teachers, other school staff, and parents/guardians, who work together to decide the school’s needs and priorities. The SGC helps write the annual school site plan that addresses student achievement, staff professional development, and school environment, and regularly reviews achievement data and progress towards those goals. The SGC also sets budget priorities for the school, which determine how state and federal funds, including Berkeley Schools Excellence Project (BSEP) funds, are spent.

The SGC writes and distributes a school-wide community survey each year to get feedback from Jefferson families about your child’s (or children’s) education and experience at the school. Survey results and comments help guide the following year’s school site plan.

Being on the SGC is a great way to participate in important decisions about Jefferson and provide your direct input, and the time commitment is usually one meeting per month, in the evening. Contact Principal Mary Cazden if you would like more information about the SGC.
