Barry Fike (2nd Grade)

Barry Fike’s first year of teaching was at Jefferson back in 1985-86. He went on to teach 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders for twelve more years in other Berkeley and Albany schools and also served as the Berkeley Federation of Teachers Union president for eight years. He rejoined Jefferson in 2007-08.

Barry, as his students call him, grew up in Berkeley and comes from a family of teachers. His mother taught in the Berkeley schools, his grandmother taught in Berkeley preschools, and his wife used to be a Berkeley teacher too (she now teaches in Albany). He has a brother who is a Berkeley secondary teacher and another brother who is a college president. Barry is a Cal graduate and received his teaching credential from San Francisco State. Barry also has a masters degree in International Relations and speaks Spanish.

Barry loves basketball, bicycling, reading, backpacking, and travel. His son graduated from Berkeley High School last year and is now going to college in Boston.  His daughter graduated from college last year and is now living and working in New York. Barry misses his own two children a lot but is happy about the adventures they are having on the East Coast and feels very fortunate to still be surrounded by children in his work.
